Is a raise percentage based on my salary before or after tax?
It is based on your salary before tax. A raise of a given percentage raises your gross pay by that share, whereas your take-home pay goes up by a smaller share after tax.
Why does my paycheck go up less than the raise percentage?
Taxes and deductions are taken from the higher gross pay too. Part of the raise goes to tax, so the take-home increase is smaller than the gross increase.
Can I use this for a pay cut?
This calculator works with raises from zero up to a full increase. A pay cut would need a negative percentage, which is outside the range this calculator accepts.
Why is the new salary not my take-home pay?
The new salary is before tax and deductions. Your take-home pay is what is left after withholding, which a take home calculator can estimate.
Is a raise the same as a bonus?
No. A raise changes your base pay from its start date on every paycheck. A bonus is usually a one-time payment, so ask your employer which one you are being offered.
