What is a cash-back portal?

A cash-back portal is a website that pays you a share of what you spend when you buy through its link. The store pays the portal a commission, and the portal passes part of it to you. The rate is set by the store and the portal, and it can change or apply only to some items. Temu is a store that appears on these portals, and this calculator is not affiliated with Temu.

How do I use it?

Enter the amount of the order before tax and shipping, because portals usually exclude those. Enter the cash-back rate the portal shows for the store on the day you buy. Enter how many orders you plan to place. If you have a cash-back target, enter it to see how many orders it takes at the rate you entered.

How does the calculation work?

Cash back on an order is the order amount multiplied by the rate. The total across your orders is that amount multiplied by the number of orders. The price after cash back is the order amount minus the cash back on that order.

The orders needed for a target is the target divided by the cash back per order, rounded up to a whole order. If the rate is zero, the calculator reports that a target cannot be reached at that rate.

Why should I check the exclusions?

Portals often exclude tax, shipping, gift cards, some sellers, and some items, and a rate can apply only for a short time. A higher headline rate can pay less than a lower rate if the eligible amount is smaller. Read the portal's terms for the store before you buy, and check whether the cash back is tracked and confirmed after the order.

Is cash back the same as a discount?

No. A discount lowers the price you pay at checkout, while cash back is paid after the order is confirmed and usually after a waiting period. Cash back also depends on the portal tracking the purchase, so a missed click or a cancelled order can remove it. Count cash back as a small saving on purchases you were going to make anyway, not as income.

What can the calculator not tell me?

The calculator uses a fixed rate, so it does not model promotional games, bonuses that change from order to order, or rates that vary by item. It does not know whether a purchase will be tracked, returned, or refunded. It also does not include the cost of buying more to reach a target, which can be more than the cash back you earn.

Treat the result as an estimate, and check your portal account for the amount actually confirmed.

Does buying more to get cash back make sense?

Only if you would have bought the item anyway. Spending more to reach a cash-back target is a loss of money, because the cash back is smaller than what you spend. A budget helps you decide what counts as a planned purchase, and it keeps cash back from becoming a reason to overspend.

Where can I get help with budgeting and shopping decisions?

Nonprofit groups publish free guidance on spending and credit. Consumer Reports tests products and publishes shopping advice. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling offers budgeting and debt guidance. The Better Business Bureau publishes tips on checking online sellers, and the Consumer Federation of America works on consumer protection. Their advice is their own, not ours.
